Stucco Over Brick That Stays Attached
Covering dated brick, painted block or plain concrete with stucco can change the look of a house or building completely. It only lasts if the masonry is prepared properly and moisture has somewhere to go.
- Brick, block & concrete
- Cleaning & surface prep
- Bonding agent or lath
- Moisture planned for

A new face for tired masonry
Many Georgia homes from past decades have orange or mixed brick that no longer fits the owner’s taste, and plenty of commercial buildings have bare concrete block that looks utilitarian. Stucco applied over that masonry gives a clean, continuous surface in any texture and color, without tearing anything down.
Masonry is a good base for cement stucco because the two materials are compatible and the wall underneath is solid. The challenge is grip. Cement stucco needs a clean, rough, absorbent surface to lock onto. Smooth or glazed brick, old paint, sealers and efflorescence all get in the way. Depending on what we find, we either clean and roughen the surface and use a bonding agent, or we fasten metal lath to the masonry and apply a full three-coat system.
Moisture needs thought too. Brick walls absorb rain and dry outward, and a stucco skin changes how that happens. We plan details at the base, at window sills and where the stucco meets the roof. See hard coat stucco systems and stucco textures for finish ideas.

What we put stucco over
Each substrate needs its own preparation before the first coat.
Brick veneer
Cleaned and checked for soundness; smooth or glazed brick usually gets lath rather than direct application.
Concrete block
Raw block takes stucco well once cleaned, and is common on commercial walls and foundations.
Poured concrete
Form oil and smooth faces have to be removed or roughened, then a bonding agent is applied.
Painted masonry
Paint blocks the bond, so it is removed or the wall is lathed before stucco goes on.
Direct application or lath over masonry
When masonry is clean, sound and porous, stucco can go directly on it, usually in two coats with a bonding agent. It is thinner and keeps trim and window depths close to what they were. When the surface is smooth, painted, sealed or uneven, lath fastened to the masonry gives the stucco a mechanical hold that does not rely on the surface at all.
We test the surface before deciding. A simple water test shows whether brick absorbs; scraping shows paint and sealers. Changes in wall thickness also affect window and door trim, so we review those details with you before work starts.
| Condition | Method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clean, porous block | Direct with bonding agent | Good natural grip |
| Smooth or glazed brick | Lath and three coats | Surface will not hold |
| Painted or sealed masonry | Strip or lath | Coating blocks the bond |
| Uneven or patched wall | Lath and three coats | Builds a true plane |
Our steps for stucco over masonry
Most of the work that makes this last happens before any stucco reaches the wall.
Inspect & test
We check the masonry for cracks, loose units and moisture, test how it absorbs water and look for paint or sealers.
- Soundness checked
- Absorption tested
- Coatings identified
Clean & prepare
The wall is cleaned of dirt, efflorescence and loose material, then roughened and primed with a bonding agent or fitted with lath.
- Surface cleaned
- Bonding agent or lath
- Trim and sills planned
Apply & finish
Base coats go on and cure, then the finish coat is applied in your chosen texture and color.
- Coats cured in turn
- Base and edges detailed
- Finish texture applied
