Carpentry Behind Every Wall Repair

When water has been getting behind stucco or siding, the wood underneath pays for it. We replace rotted studs, sheathing, trim and fascia as part of the same job, so the new finish goes onto a solid, dry structure.

The wood under the wall

Why stucco crews need carpenters

Open up a leaking stucco wall and you often find more than wet paper. Sheathing turns soft and crumbles, the bottom of a stud or the sill plate under a window has rotted, and trim boards or fascia at the roof line are punky to the touch. None of that can be fixed with stucco.

On many jobs, a homeowner ends up juggling a stucco contractor, a carpenter and a painter, each waiting on the others. We handle the carpentry ourselves as part of envelope repair. Once the wall is open, we cut out rotted wood back to sound material, sister or replace framing where needed, install new sheathing and rebuild window bucks, trim and fascia. Then the weather barrier, lath and stucco, or new siding, go on top in the same project.

This work usually follows leak detection and comes before stucco repair or fiber cement siding. We also do the same substrate work for commercial clients when a facade is opened.

What we rebuild

Carpentry we do during envelope repair

Every item here is something we regularly find once a damaged section of wall is opened.

Wall sheathing

Soft or delaminated plywood and OSB is cut out and replaced so the weather barrier and lath have a solid base.

Solid base restored

Studs & plates

Rotted stud ends, sill plates and headers are sistered or replaced, keeping the wall straight and properly supported.

Framing made sound

Window bucks & sills

Wood framing around leaking windows is rebuilt so the opening can be flashed correctly before trim and stucco return.

Openings rebuilt right

Fascia & soffit

Rotted fascia boards and soffit sections at roof edges are replaced, often where a missing kick-out sent water into the eave.

Roof edges repaired

Exterior trim

Corner boards, band boards and window casing are replaced with new material, primed and ready for paint.

Trim primed and fit

Termite-damaged wood

Wood damaged by termites is removed and replaced, while your pest control company handles inspection and treatment.

How far the wood repair goes

Not every wet board needs to come out. Wood that is stained but still firm and dries out can often stay. Wood that is soft, crumbles under a probe or has lost its fastener hold has to be replaced, or the new finish will move and crack over it.

We show you what we find with photos as the wall is opened. If the damage is wider than the original scope, you see it and approve the change before we go further, either in person or through Jobber.

Our process

How carpentry fits into a wall repair

Carpentry happens in the middle of the job, between opening the wall and closing it back up.

Open & probe

We remove the damaged stucco or siding and probe every piece of exposed wood to find where the rot stops.

  • Wood probed piece by piece
  • Rot limits marked
  • Photos shared with you

Replace & frame

Rotted framing is sistered or replaced, new sheathing is fastened, and window bucks, trim and fascia are rebuilt with new lumber.

  • Framing made sound
  • New sheathing fastened
  • Trim and fascia rebuilt

Wrap & close

New weather barrier and flashing are lapped over the carpentry, and stucco or siding is installed and finished to match the house.

  • Weather barrier lapped
  • Flashing installed
  • Finish matched

Questions & answers

Carpentry questions

What homeowners ask about the wood repair behind stucco and siding.

Do I need a separate carpenter for my stucco repair?
No. We handle the sheathing, framing, trim and fascia repair ourselves as part of the envelope repair. That keeps one team responsible for the whole wall, from the studs out.
How do you know how much wood is rotted before opening the wall?
Moisture readings through the stucco show where the wall is wet and give a good idea of the area. The exact extent is only known once the wall is open, which is why we photograph what we find and confirm any changes with you.
Can rotted wood be treated instead of replaced?
Wood that is only stained and still firm can stay once it dries out. Wood that is soft or will not hold a nail has lost its strength and should be replaced, or the new stucco or siding will not stay attached.
Do you replace fascia and trim on their own?
We usually do trim and fascia work as part of a stucco, siding or flashing repair, since the cause is often the same leak. Ask us about your situation and we will tell you whether it fits our scope.
Will the new trim be painted?
New trim is primed, and we can paint it to match the house as part of the project. See our painting service.
