Kickout Flashing for Stucco Homes

Where a lower roof ends against a stucco wall, a small bent piece of metal decides whether rain runs into the gutter or down inside your wall. If yours is missing, we add one and repair the damage it left behind.

  • Missing kick-outs added
  • Rot below repaired
  • Stucco matched
  • Gutters kept working

A small part of your roof

Why one corner of your house stays wet

Look at the spot where a porch roof, garage roof or lower roof section stops at a second-story stucco wall. Rain running down that roof line follows the step flashing to the bottom edge. With a kickout in place, the water is turned sideways into the gutter. Without one, it pours onto the wall right at the end of the gutter and soaks in behind the stucco.

On many stucco homes built before kick-outs were routinely installed, that corner has taken water during every storm for years. The damage usually starts out of sight: wet sheathing, then rotted framing and sometimes a stain on an inside wall or ceiling. From outside you may notice a dark streak, cracking or a soft, bulging patch in the stucco just below the roof edge.

The fix has two parts. We add a proper kickout tied into the existing flashing and weather barrier, then open the stucco below to replace any rotted wood and rebuild the wall with matching texture and color. Not sure if it has spread? Start with leak detection. For other flashing on your home, see stucco flashing.

Warning signs

Signs your house is missing a kickout

Walk around your home after a rain and look below every place a roof edge stops at a wall.

Dark streaks

A vertical stain or water trail running down the stucco from the bottom of a roof line.

Look after a storm

Cracks below the roof edge

Cracking or crumbling finish in the triangle of wall under the roof corner.

Often the first clue

Soft or bulging stucco

A section that sounds hollow, flexes when pressed or has pushed outward.

Wet wood behind it

Inside stains

Water marks on a ceiling or wall inside, near the corner where the roof meets the wall.

Damage has spread

Rot or insects

Wet framing attracts wood-destroying insects; we repair the wood and your pest control company handles treatment.

No metal visible

If you see no angled piece of flashing at the bottom of the roof line, assume it is missing.

Easy to check
How big is the job?

What the repair includes depends on the damage

If the kickout is missing but the wall is still dry, the work is small: a neat opening, the new flashing and a matched patch. Most homes we see have some damage below, because the corner has been wet for a while, and the repair grows with it.

We take moisture readings before quoting so the scope reflects what is behind the stucco, and you approve any change if we find more once the wall is open.

Our process

Adding a kickout to your home

Most single kickout repairs are finished within a few days, allowing for stucco cure time.

Check the corner

We probe the stucco below each roof-to-wall corner to see whether the wood behind it is wet and how far the moisture reaches.

  • Every roof corner checked
  • Moisture mapped
  • Photos for you

Install & repair

The stucco is opened, any rotted sheathing or framing is replaced, and the new kickout is installed with the step flashing and weather barrier.

  • Rotted wood replaced
  • Kickout installed
  • Barrier lapped over it

Patch & blend

We rebuild the stucco around the kickout and match the texture and color, then confirm the gutter end catches the diverted water.

  • Stucco rebuilt
  • Color matched
  • Gutter end checked

Questions & answers

Kickout flashing questions

What homeowners ask us about kickouts.

What is a kickout flashing?
It is an angled piece of flashing at the bottom of a roof-to-wall line. It turns water running down the roof edge away from the wall and into the gutter.
My house is many years old and has never leaked. Do I still need one?
Possibly. Water from a missing kickout often soaks the sheathing for years before anything shows outside or inside. A moisture check of that corner tells you whether damage has started.
Can my roofer add a kickout?
A roofer can install the flashing, but on a stucco home the stucco has to be opened and rebuilt around it so the kickout laps under the weather barrier. We handle both the flashing and the stucco.
Will the patch show?
We match the texture by hand and blend custom-mixed color into the surrounding wall. On faded walls, a light recoat of that section can give a more even result.
How do I schedule a check?
Send the form or call (888) 592-1304. We look at every roof-to-wall corner on the house and send a written quote you can approve online.
