The City of Stone Mountain is a compact village of Main Street storefronts, older houses on the streets climbing toward the mountain and the historic Shermantown neighborhood. Much of what people call Stone Mountain, though, lies outside those limits in unincorporated DeKalb County: subdivisions from the 1970s onward, Smoke Rise on the hills to the north and the commercial strips along Memorial Drive, Rockbridge Road and Highway 78.
