Interior Stucco Walls With Hand-Troweled Texture

Stucco and plaster finishes bring texture and warmth indoors: a feature wall behind a fireplace, a curved arch in a hallway, or a restaurant dining room with an old-world feel. We build them and match existing interior finishes.

Stucco indoors

Texture you can feel

Interior stucco is less about weather and more about character. Indoors, a cement or lime-based finish, or a modern acrylic plaster, can be troweled into soft movement, heavy texture or a smooth, slightly mottled surface that changes with the light through the day.

In homes, owners ask for it on fireplace walls, stairwells, wine rooms, arched openings and around built-in niches. In commercial spaces, restaurants, hotel lobbies, tasting rooms and retail interiors use it to give a room a distinct look that holds up to people brushing past.

The base matters. Interior stucco can go over masonry, metal lath on framing or a primed board, but each needs its own preparation so the finish bonds and does not crack at seams. Curves and arches take shaping with lath or a flexible base before any texture goes on. We also match existing interior textures when a wall is repaired or a room is added. For plaster systems see plaster walls; for exterior options see stucco textures.

Where interior stucco works well

Most projects are one wall or one feature, sized to give a room a focal point.

Fireplace walls

Textured surrounds and chimney breasts that frame a fireplace without the weight of stone.

Arches & niches

Curved openings, barrel ceilings and recessed niches shaped and finished by hand.

Choosing an interior finish

Each interior finish has a different look and feel. Cement and lime finishes give an authentic, slightly irregular surface. Acrylic plasters are more consistent and come in a wide color range. Smooth troweled finishes read modern, while heavier textures feel rustic.

We make sample boards in your chosen color and texture so you can see them in the room before we start. Integral color in the finish means scuffs show less than on a painted wall.

Lighting changes everything with texture. A raking light from a sconce or a tall window throws shadows across every trowel mark, while flat overhead light makes the same wall look calm. We look at where your light comes from before settling on how heavy the texture should be.

Our process

Building an interior stucco wall

Interior work is done with the room protected and dust controlled, often while the rest of the house or business stays in use.

Design & sample

We discuss the look, check the existing wall or framing, and prepare samples of texture and color for your approval.

  • Look agreed
  • Base inspected
  • Samples approved

Shape the base

Lath or a suitable board is installed, arches and niches are formed, and seams and corners are reinforced.

  • Curves formed
  • Seams reinforced
  • Bonding primer applied

Trowel the finish

Base and finish coats are troweled to the approved texture, cured, and sealed where the space calls for it.

  • Texture as sampled
  • Even color
  • Sealed if needed

Questions & answers

Interior stucco questions

Questions about stucco and plaster finishes inside homes and businesses.

Can stucco be applied over drywall?
Yes, with the right preparation. The board is primed with a bonding primer and seams are reinforced, or a thin acrylic plaster is used. Heavy cement textures go better over lath.
Is interior stucco hard to clean?
Smooth and fine textures wipe clean easily. Heavier textures can hold dust, so a clear sealer is often applied in kitchens, dining rooms and commercial spaces.
Can you match an existing interior stucco texture?
Yes. We study the texture, make test boards and blend the color, so an addition or repaired area matches the rest of the room.
How long does an interior stucco wall take?
A single feature wall often takes a few days because each coat needs time to set. Arches, curved ceilings and large commercial areas take longer, and we give you a schedule with the quote.
Will an interior stucco wall crack?
Fine cracks can appear where a wall sits over board seams or framing that moves, which is why seams and corners are reinforced before the finish goes on. Lime finishes can also show a light craze that many owners like as part of the look.
Can a textured wall be made smooth again later?
Yes. A textured interior wall can be skimmed flat and refinished, or covered with a smooth plaster coat. It is more work than painting, so it helps to choose a texture you will want to live with.
